In addition to our physical body we have an energetic or light body, and within this energetic body there are seven main energy centres known as chakras.

What are energy centres or chakras?

The Sanskrit word chakra means ‘wheel’, and each energy centre moves with a spinning motion, forming a vortex of energy.

The function of the chakras is to spin and draw-in universal life force energy to keep the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical health of the body in balance.

7chakrasJust as our physical senses perceive the physical world, our energy centres sense the energetic vibrations in our environment.

Some common examples of our energetic sensitivity include:

  • walking into a chapel and having a sense of love and peace
  • walking into a room after an argument and feeling that you could ‘cut the air with a knife’
  • having a sense of lightness after a difficult situation is resolved.

Each energy centre is associated with different aspects of our life.
The three lower centres – root, sacral and solar plexus – are associated with our relationship to the physical world.
The three upper centres – throat, third eye and crown – are associated with our connection to spirit and our higher selves.
And the heart centre represents the union of our body, mind and spirit.

Our energetic body has a magnetic field and the energy centres serve as magnets. According to The LifeLine Technique philosophy, the energy centres attract and repel experiences that represent the subconscious mind.

Any limiting beliefs we have about ourselves are held in our energy centres. These limiting beliefs cause resistance to the flow of energy through the centre and also form a lens of misperception.

For example, if you have limiting beliefs about your self-worth the vibratory frequency of your solar plexus chakra will be affected and you are likely to attract experiences that reinforce your beliefs, such as unhealthy or critical relationships.

root chakraThe Root Chakra

The root or base chakra is the first centre, which is located at the perineum and is concerned with physical needs and basic human survival.

It reflects the degree to which we are connected to the earth and our ability to ‘keep our feet firmly on the ground’ as well as a fundamental connection to our family.

Psychological Functions: Survival, vitality, grounding, security, support, stability, sexuality, individuality, courage, impulsiveness.

Physical Issues: Lower back, sciatica, fatigue, obesity, constipation, colds, adrenals, feet, hands, and immune system.

Emotional Issues: Physical security, group safety, feeling at home, ability to stand up for yourself, and stability with family, relationships, work and money.

The root chakra’s energy will be out of balance if, for example, you:

  • subscribe to family or social beliefs that no longer serve you
  • consider your religion, political beliefs, social class and so on to be better than others
  • hold onto negative experiences in your family

Positive actions to strengthen your root centre include: exercise and physical activities such as yoga; developing a conscious relationship with money; honouring your personal code of conduct; wearing red clothes; and listening to stimulating music with deep beats, such as drums.

sacral chakraThe Sacral Chakra

The sacral chakra is the second centre, located two inches above the pubic bone. It represents our creative energy and is associated with pleasure, intimacy, nurture, movement and change.

Psychological Functions: Feelings, emotions, intimacy, procreation, sensuality, confidence, sociability, freedom, and movement.

Physical Issues: genitals, reproductive organs, large intestine, skin, lower vertebrae, hip area, appendix, bladder, wrists and ankles, impotence, frigidity, candida, eating disorders, drug use, depression, alcoholism, gout, and allergies.

Emotional Issues: Self versus other; moving away from the ‘tribe’; pleasure surrounding sex, recreation, and eating; physical and mental enjoyment; power and control; blame and guilt; ethics and honour in relationships.

The sacral chakra’s energy will be out of balance if, for example, you:

  • attempt to control others in relationships
  • fuel fears about making or losing money
  • harbour unresolved conflicts about your sexuality.

Positive actions to strengthen your sacral centre: respect one another, use your creative forces, be devoted to the self, go with the flow in relationships, release the power of money as a motivating factor, include orange artwork in your home, and listen to music with a bounce or that flows.

solar plexus chakra1The Solar Plexus energy centre

The solar plexus chakra is the third centre, located just above the navel. It is about embracing your individuality and uniqueness while continuing to celebrate your connection with all humanity.

Psychological Functions: Personal power, will, wit, laughter, mental clarity, optimism, self-control, curiosity, awareness.

Physical Issues: Digestive system, endocrine glands, diaphragm, nervous system, calves and forearms, middle part of back and spine, diabetes, ulcers, timidity, addictions to stimulants, toxicity, jaundice, and poor memory.

Emotional Issues: Personal power, trust, fear, confidence, self-esteem and self-worth, responsibility for making decisions, self-mastery and personal honour, sensitivity to criticism and rejection, and intuitive voice.

The solar plexus chakra’s energy will be out of balance if, for example, you:

  • break your commitments to yourself
  • manipulate, dominate or abuse others
  • fail to maintain clear personal boundaries
  • seek approval of others
  • take on responsibility for everything and everyone.

Positive actions to strengthen your solar plexus centre: take responsibility for your choices and actions; honour yourself; maintain strong personal boundaries; take pride in your work; trust your intuition; keep your word; detoxify your body; complete mind puzzles; wear a yellow gemstone or yellow gold; and listen to music that is mentally stimulating, such as chimes or horn instruments.

heart chakraThe Heart Chakra

The heart chakra is the fourth centre, located in the centre of the chest. It is concerned with forgiveness and compassion – unconditional love through which we accept another for doing their best.

The heart chakra is integral to an individual’s ability to express love – platonic, romantic and spiritual.

Psychological Functions: Relationships, love, acceptance, self-control, compassion, guilt, forgiveness, harmony, peace, renewal.

Physical Issues: lungs, heart, chest, breasts, rib cage, circulatory system, thymus gland, knees, elbows, high blood pressure, lethargy, asthma, immune system, muscle tension.

Emotional Issues: unhealed emotional wounds, memories and relationships; love and intimacy; failure and loneliness; disorientation and alienation; hatred, grief, and anger; resentment and bitterness; forgiveness and compassion; and hope and trust.

The heart chakra’s energy will be out of balance if, for example, you:

  • allow past negative experiences to limit your choices
  • hold on to resentments
  • don’t allow others to love you
  • allow others to control you with their emotional wounds.

Positive actions to strengthen your heart chakra: cherish yourself first and then others; forgive others unconditionally; allow others to experience the world in their own way; spend time with family and friends; express caring in action; be patient with yourself and others; surround yourself with plants and listen to music with the sounds of nature; and utilise green décor in your home.

throat chakraThe Throat Chakra

The throat chakra is the fifth centre, located in the centre of your throat. It is the first of the higher centres and is associated with communication, self-expression, and higher creativity, such as the creation of word and song.

Psychological Functions: Communication, wisdom, speech, trust, creative expression, planning, organisation, caution.

Emotional Issues: Power of the will, procrastination, judgment and criticism, outward expression and inward acceptance, control of self, control by others, self-expression, and trusting in divine guidance.

The throat chakra’s energy will be out of balance if, for example, you:

  • let others define your needs and wants
  • tell lies
  • experience shame
  • are afraid to express yourself
  • and lose control of your willpower.

Positive actions to strengthen your throat chakra: surrender personal will to Divine will; express yourself authentically; exercise self-control; empower others; speak honestly; recognise how you feel and communicate your emotions to others; use your personal power to create; follow your dreams; sing in the shower; read poetry; participate in meaningful conversations; listen to music that is repetitive, such as the sound of rain or breaking waves; and wear turquoise and blue clothes.

third eye chakraThe Third Eye Chakra

The third eye chakra is the sixth centre, located in the centre of your forehead just above your eyebrows. It offers the ability to see and understand all things through a connection with the higher functions of consciousness – insight and introspection.

Psychological Functions: Intuition, invention, imagination, psychic abilities, self-realisation, perception, understanding, memory, fearlessness.

Physical Issues: Vision, blindness, migraines, earaches, sinuses, equilibrium imbalances, cerebellum, pituitary gland, forebrain, autonomic nervous system, nightmares, sleep disorders, manic depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and paranoia.

Emotional Issues: Intuition and emotional intelligence; intellectual abilities; openness to new ideas; fear

The third eye chakra’s energy will be out of balance if, for example, you:

  • hold on to old grief
  • close your mind to non-rational possibilities
  • insist on logical explanations for your internal experience
  • have disempowering attitudes toward yourself
  • judge others.

Positive actions to strengthen your third eye chakra: take emotional risks; open your mind to extravagant possibilities; daydream; follow your hunches; seek only the truth; keep a balanced state of mind; see the truth and Divine perfection in all things; clear the subconscious in preparation for intuition; learn from experience and emotional intelligence; take action to make changes in your life; meditate; listen to classical music, such as Mozart or Bach; and wear silver jewellery.

crown chakraThe Crown energy centre

The crown energy centre is the seventh centre, located inline with your ears on top of your head. It is associated with deep inner searching, self-realisation, meaning and fulfilment, divine wisdom and understanding of humanity, spirituality, devotion, conscious evolution, and enlightenment.

Psychological Functions: Knowingness, wisdom, inspiration, charisma, awareness, higher self, meditation, self-sacrificing, and visionary.

Physical Issues: Top of head, highest brain centres, pineal gland, central nervous system, hair growth, neuralgia, and senility.

Emotional Issues: Faith, wisdom and spirituality; selflessness; power to view situations from an expanded perspective; ability to trust life; sense of oneness with all creation; and mental illness and alienation.

The crown chakra’s energy will be out of balance if, for example, you:

  • live a life without faith
  • put conditions on your spiritual experience
  • reject guidance unless it comes in a form you approve
  • display religious prejudice
  • complain or bargain with the Divine
  • search for answers outside yourself.

Positive actions to strengthen your crown chakra: pray consciously; express gratitude; regard your life as a vehicle for spiritual development; live in the present moment; experience a connection with the Divine; focus on dreams and writing down visions and inventions; enjoy quiet contemplation, meditation and yoga; quieten your mind and enjoy silence; and carry an amethyst stone or wear violet clothes.
